Description
Important Aubusson tapestry from the mid-18th century
Dimensions: 284 cm high x 203 cm wide
Design by Jean Baptiste Pillement
In wool and silk
Lined and braided tapestry.
Note the touch of red, a mark of quality.
Remarkably fresh colours, beautiful polychromy, a lovely palette of blues, greens, yellows, reds and browns typical of foliage, in the spirit of Aubusson ‘Chinoiserie’ tapestries from around 1760.
In good condition, with a few slight instances of natural oxidation.
Featuring a design of large exotic trees (palm trees) forming columns of foliage framing very abundant and deliberately fantastical vegetation.
Featuring exotic birds, notably a large wading bird in the foreground on the right.
Asian and Oriental-style architecture in the background, rendered in perspective (a pavilion and a pagoda) near a body of water.
A beautiful border decorated with rows of star-shaped flowers against an abrache background (shades of brown wool)
A beautiful border creating a framing effect
