Description
GIANNI DOVA (1939-1991) "Monumento Silkscreen print on zinc, signed lower right with authentication on the back and gallery stamp. Size: 56.5 x 81 cm An Italian painter born in Rome, Gianni Dova moved to Milan in 1939. After studying art at the Brera Academy in Milan, he held his first exhibition there in 1947. In 1946 he was one of the co-signatories of the Oltre Guernica manifesto, and in 1951 he joined Lucio Fontana's spacialism movement. From that date onwards, his work was recognised and he himself became a representative of young Italian painting. His first canvases were inspired by Surrealism, with reminiscences of Picasso and Ernst inspired by Modernism. Undefined creatures emerge from heavy, darkly coloured pastes. As his painting evolved, his work moved towards abstraction, without abandoning the baroque spirit of his early works. At this time, he opted for an interpretation of tachism to which he would remain faithful.
