Description
ASGER JORN (1914-1973)
"WaBrmal", 1957
Watercolour on paper with "Schoeller" stamp, mounted on isorel, signed lower right. Old exhibition label on the back.
Size: 45 x 35 cm
Provenance: Samlung: Wolfgang Hauer
In 1957, Jorn was deeply immersed in the German and Scandinavian art scene, travelling extensively between Denmark, Germany and Italy and socialising with German-speaking artists and intellectuals.
The title waBemal took on a particular meaning: "bemalen" in German literally means "to cover with paint", "to coat", sometimes with the connotation of paint applied in a dense and almost excessive manner - which corresponds exactly to his practice at the time.
We could therefore read waBemal as a kind of self-portrait of the act of painting itself: "that which is covered with paint", or more loosely, "the thing painted" - with Jorn's characteristic irony in calling a painting simply... a painting.
