Description
CHIURAZZI FOUNDERY, NAPOLI (XIX-XXth CENTURY)
Very large sculpture of Hermes seated on a rock
Large bronze model with grey shaded patina resting on a rocky marble base. Exceptional work, Chiurazzi Foundry mark on the back.
Dimensions: ca. 125 x 115 x 75 cm, very heavy.
This model is a remake of the extraordinary statue discovered during the excavations of the Villa dei Papyrus in Herculaneum in 1758 and now kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. It depicts the God of travellers and merchants Hermes (Mercury to the Romans) resting. Specialists agree that it is a Roman copy from the 1st century AD based on a Greek bronze from the 3rd century BC.
