Description
AGATHON LEONARD (1841-1923)
The "Dancer with Cothurns", large model circa 1901
Large sculpture in chryselephantine bronze and carved ivory, the headband with traces of gilding, the circular marble base. Signed "A Léonard" and stamped "Susse Fr Ets".
Total dimensions: h. ca. 58 cm - Dancer: 53 cm
At the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, Agathon Léonard presented his famous "surtout" entitled "Jeu de l'écharpe" on the Manufacture de Sèvres stand, comprising fifteen statuettes of female dancers inspired by the choreography of Loïe Fuller. The following year, these same figures, including the Danseuse aux Cothurnes, were produced by the foundry Susse Frères and offered in gilded bronze, silvered bronze or, in their most refined version, chryselephantine bronze, where the parts representing the skin are made of ivory, as is the case here.

A Belgian sculptor who became a naturalised French citizen, Léonard Agathon Van Weydeveldt, known as Agathon Léonard, trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Lille and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he settled permanently in 1868.
Deeply involved in the Art Nouveau movement, he joined the Société des Artistes Français in 1887 and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897. Although he worked on medallions, bronze statuettes and ceramics, his works focused mainly on the human figure, especially the female.
