Description
Victor VASARELY (1906–1997)
Global Folklore – 1985
Original collage of cut-out and coloured paper on board
Signed lower right. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse
50 x 50 cm
Certificate by Mr Pierre Vasarely dated 24 April 2023
Note: In 1964, Vasarely succeeded in devising a form of ‘permutational’ art, defined as ‘the totality of the products of methodical combinations of simple elements of limited variety, created according to a rule of assembly that the artist establishes a priori’. His approach is similar to that of computer science. Circles and squares cut from thick paper interlock or intersect. This technique is reminiscent of Matisse’s paper cut-outs. Colour bursts forth in the works of “Planetary Folklore”. The plastic unit is revisited, “composed of two geometric elements that slot into one another, combine and permute”. With these two-coloured units, in powerful or contrasting tones, the visual artist invents his ‘Plastic Alphabet’, which gives concrete form to an idea dating back to the turn of the century amongst abstract artists: that of developing a method enabling the creation of a universal language comprehensible to all.
