Note: A leading figure in French sculpture of the second half of the 20th century, Philippe Hiquily developed a significant body of furniture design alongside his sculptural work. From the 1960s onwards, he applied his sculptural vocabulary to his furniture: biomorphic forms, taut lines, a balance of masses and a penchant for worked metals. His furniture, designed in close connection with his sculptural work, is sought after by connoisseurs and major collectors of contemporary art. Hiquily notably created furniture and ensembles for private collectors such as Marie-Laure de Noailles, André Malraux and Gérard de Villiers (who owned tables very similar to ours), as well as the interior designer Henri Samuel, making some of these creations veritable sculptural pieces intended to engage in dialogue with the artworks gathered within their interiors. Hammered brass holds a special place in his body of work. Crafted entirely by hand, in the tradition of ancient Greece, it retains the traces of the artist’s touch and transforms the metal’s surface into a vibrant, irregular and luminous material. At Hiquily, the table’s functional purpose thus takes a back seat to a genuine exploration of form. These furniture designs form an integral part of the artist’s body of work and are today particularly prized for their rarity, their sculptural quality and their direct connection to the world of his sculptures.
