Description
Frédéric BRULY BOUABRE (1923–2014) Tennis du monde – 2009 Series of ten works in coloured pencil and ballpoint pen on card Signed and dated on the reverse (each) Titled on the front (each) 16 x 11 cm (each) Provenance: Acquired from the Galerie Jean Brolly, Paris Note: This series of ten drawings, produced in 2009, perfectly illustrates the encyclopaedic and poetic approach of Bruly Bouabré, “the inventor of the Bété script”. By depicting these ‘tennis players’ dressed in the colours of the continent’s various flags, the artist transcends the simple portrait to create a unique pan-African panorama. True to his favoured technique of working on small-format cardboard, Bouabré transforms a sporting scene into a reflection on identity, belonging and universality
