Description
Vietnam, Minh Mang period, third year of the reign, 1822 Bronze barrel with a beautiful green patina, incised calligraphy evoking the 3rd year of the reign of Minh Mang (1820-1840). Restorations on the barrel. N.B: Similar model see exhibition "Cổ vật hội tụ" (Convergence d'antiquités) is a cannon dating from the same year. Dimensions: L. 152 cm Diameter 29 cm. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng, these cannons were mainly used to defend the territory and imperial power. The country faced internal revolts and external threats. The cannons therefore played a defence and military deterrence role. Vietnam also had to prepare itself against European powers such as France and Great Britain. Minh Mạng wanted to protect the coasts, ports and maritime communications. He modernised the army by centralising weapons production and developing arsenals. The cannons symbolised both military modernity and the power of imperial rule
