Description
Ramanuja
Southern India circa 17th century
Copper alloy. Height 23 cm
An important figure in the Shri-vaishnava movement,
movement, Ramanuja is said to have been born in Tamil Nadu around 1050
many temples and created numerous monasteries
throughout southern India. In Mysore, he converted the
ruler of the Hoysalas, King VIshnuvardhana.
Rejecting the cult of images, he had admitted many
castes into his order. The author of numerous
religious treatises, he is considered by his disciples to be
a new incarnation of Vishnu.
He is depicted here in his classical iconography,
seated with his hands clasped in front of his chest. The object he is holding
in the crook of his right arm is not an axe, but a stick
but a staff on which hangs a sort of banner.
Note the very fine quality of the casting, which emphasises
of the body.
