Western India circa 15th-16th century
Copper alloy Height 13 cm
Superb representation of the divine couple symbolising the union of
masculine and feminine principles. Shiva is seated in relaxation,
ardhaparyanka on a lotus brandishing the axe and the antelope
with his upper hands, the lower ones making the gesture of
donation, varada mudra, and supporting Parvati. Nandi, her vehicle
lying under his right foot.
Parvati is traditionally seated on her husband's left knee
left foot resting on the lion, her vehicle.
Note the very beautiful attitude of the goddess looking at her
her husband. On either side of the throne, their children are represented.
