Three Matrikas Central India circa 10th-12th century Stoneware 48 x 55 cm These three deities were originally part of a frieze illustrating Shiva, the "master of music" (Vinadharadaksinamurti), leading the dance of the seven matrikas (saptamatrikas). (Vinadharadaksinamurti) leading the dance of the seven matrikas (saptamatrikas) and Ganesha. These seven mothers are the shaktis or 'active powers' of the great gods of the pantheon. They can be identified by their attributes and their vehicle (vahana) at their feet. Here, from left to right, we can identify Kaumari (shakti of Kumara, the god of war) brandishing a spear, (shakti of Vishnu) holding the disc and having Garuda at her feet, and Varahi (shakti of Vishnu) holding the disc and having Garuda at her feet. and Varahi (shakti of Varaha) with her water buffalo at her feet and her pig's head.
