China circa 17th century
Copper alloy gilded with lacquer. Height 38.5 cm
The goddess of compassion is depicted in the attitude of royal ease,
the right knee raised supporting the right hand which must have been
holding an object, probably a scroll.
She is traditionally dressed in a long draped robe open over the chest
across the chest and up over the headdress.
A tiara that was once adorned with a small figure of Amitabha
encircles the base of her bun.
