Description
Senufo male figure
Attributed to the workshop of the "Cock's Crest" master
Ivory Coast
Wood. 68 cm high
This is an interesting standing male sculpture, whose general style, although not
even if it does not show the traces of a long and intensive use "in situ", presents a set of particular details
such as the eyes underlined by double lines, the scarification descending in curves from the wings of the
from the wings of the nose to the corners of the mouth, the chin and mouth forming a prominent point
and mouth forming a protruding point, the slim oblong torso seen from the front and the arched back, the very wide arms
arms very wide at the shoulders and encircled by rings before tapering towards the elbows, and the legs
allows us to propose an attribution, if not to the master known as "à la crête de coq" himself
because of a few specific details, but at least to one of the great disciples of his
his workshop. The right hand must have been brandishing a sceptre or weapon.
Note the remarkable interplay of volumes and openings typical of this particular style
of Senufo art.
