Description
CHINA - WANLI period (1573-1620). Rare reticulated BOL decorated with six medallions depicting idyllic lakescapes The openwork latticework base, between a band of ruyi and a border of "wheel" motifs Porcelain and blue underglaze, unglazed underside H. 7.5 cm - D. 14.5 cm Note: The Chinese technique of "ling long", or "delicate openwork", involves painstakingly piercing the walls of a vessel to create intricate lace patterns. This goldsmith's work demands exceptional skill: the craftsman has to cut the clay by hand when it reaches a "leather-hard" consistency, a critical stage when the material is firm enough to be sculpted but still fragile. This precision is matched by a technical challenge during the firing process, when the openwork structure risks collapsing under the effect of the heat. As expert Christiaan Jörg points out in his study of the Rijksmuseum collections, while these refined pieces are attested in the records of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) between 1643 and 1646, their production dates back even earlier, to the Wanli period.
