Description
CHINA, Han period Terracotta vase Quadrangular in shape, the so-called "Hu" model, standing on a high square foot, with a wide body topped by a neck that flares out at the opening, showing old traces of polychromy that originally made up the painted decoration. Height: 39 cm Width: 19.8 cm (Small chips on the base and at the top of the neck) Provenance: Former French family collection. The object may have come from one of the present owner's great-grandfathers, born in 1873, a non-commissioned officer trained at Saint-Cyr, who spent time in Asia from 1898. Present in China from 1901, where he stayed for over ten years, he brought back many objects during his travels, as non-commissioned officers were able to keep certain gifts received from their superiors. These were then passed down through the generations.
