Description
ƒ CHINA, Jiajing mark and period Rare "Magic Fountain" porcelain ewer Of a form inspired by models from the Near East, the flattened pear-shaped body resting on a flared foot, fitted with a long hexagonal serpentine spout and an arched handle with fastener intended to receive the lid. Decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with stylised leaves around the flared base and a fountain resting on a table, spouting water from phoenix and dragon heads. The flared neck is decorated with banana leaves, the spout with auspicious lozenges and flame scrolls, and the handle with floral motifs. The tip of the spout and the silver clasp are finely engraved with stylised lozenges, and the domed silver lid is joined to the ewer by a band of stylised leaves. The base bears a six-character Jiajing mark within a double square. Height: 31 cm (The spout cut off, the handle replaced by a mounting) Provenance: Former collection of General Zinovi Pechkoff (1884-1966).
