CHINA, Yongzheng period, 18th century
Set of five circular porcelain plates, each elegantly decorated in famille rose enamels with gallant scenes taken from the novel The Western Pavilion ( Xi xiang ji ), in which the hero of the novel, Zhangsheng, crosses the garden wall after throwing his boots against it, leaning on a willow to join his beloved, Cui Yingying ; the scenes in quadrangular cartouches imitating unfolded scrolls, the borders decorated with lobed cartouches of precious objects and spiral backgrounds.
