Description
Thomas A Schweitzer’s scrapbook. Brown leather album, inscribed on the cover: ‘Thomas Art Schweitzer US Navy 3 Nov 1942 – 9 Jan 1943’. The binding is broken. Thomas A Schweitzer was a sailor on the USS PC 496 and the USS Evarts DE-5. Contains a photograph of the sailor and his discharge certificate. A few poems. A few black-and-white photographs. Numerous miscellaneous documents, including some photocopies of photographs. Photographs of his wedding. Please note that the item shows some wear and has developed a patina. The USS PC-496 was a PC-461-class submarine chaser built for the US Navy during the Second World War. She was sunk on 4 June 1943 in the Mediterranean. Although it was speculated at the time of her sinking that the cause was a naval mine, it was later revealed that the PC-496 had been sunk by an Italian submarine. The Evarts was launched on 7 December 1942 at the Boston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts, as BDE-5, intended for transfer to Britain. Instead, she was retained for service in the United States. She was commissioned into the Navy on 15 April 1943. From the collection of Henri-Paul Enjames, author of a reference work on US military equipment during the Second World War. Condition II+.
