Description
A pair of Buddhist lions, known as ‘Fô dogs’, China, Ming dynasty, late 16th – early 17th century
A pair of glazed stoneware sculptures, depicting two seated Buddhist lions with their heads turned slightly and their tails curled upwards. Both figures rest on moulded rectangular plinths, the sides of which are decorated with animal motifs in relief. The whole is covered in turquoise and aubergine glazes, with dark highlights; the backs of the plinths, featuring moulded stylised lingzhi decoration, are left unglazed. The glaze surface shows a network of craquelure.
Height: 16.5 cm
Wear to the glaze, pitting and small areas of missing glaze, firing cracks, general wear.
The technique and colour palette are characteristic of Fahua ware, associated with kilns in northern China, particularly in Shanxi.
