Description
Small porcelain jar with two handles, China, Yuan dynasty, 14th century
Ovoid in shape and slightly lobed, the body is divided by vertical ribs in slight relief; it is surmounted by a short, flared neck with a scalloped rim, flanked by two small, horizontal, perforated cylindrical handles. It is glazed in blue, with an underglaze decoration of flowering chrysanthemum branches, rendered in a free, cursive style, alternating with panels left unglazed. The glaze, which is slightly bluish and features a few small, scattered cobalt dots, also covers the inside of the neck, whilst the base is left unglazed. An inventory label is affixed to the underside.
Height: 9.5 cm
Some wear, micro-chips, minor firing defects.
The two-part construction, characteristic of many small vessels from this production, as well as the shape of the handles and the floral decoration, bear close resemblance to several blue-and-white porcelain jars from Jingdezhen dating from the Yuan dynasty, particularly in collections of ceramics from South-East Asia.
