Description
Glazed biscuit figurine, China, Kangxi period (1662–1722)
Depicting Zhenwu – ??, the Perfect Warrior, a Taoist deity associated with the North and the cosmological symbol. The deity is depicted seated, his bare feet resting on a plinth, clad in a long robe with deeply modelled folds, cinched at the chest by a belt. The face, with its stylised features, is surmounted by a headdress with long hair, whilst a wide collar falls down the back. The right hand holds the belt, whilst the left hand rests on his knee with the index finger pointing downwards, forming a variation on the ritual gesture characteristic of Zhenwu. The robe is entirely covered in a turquoise-blue glaze, with an incised decoration of stylised clouds and waves. The face, one hand and part of the plinth are left in bisque.
Height: 15.5 cm
Wear to the glaze; chipping.
