Description
A pair of powder-blue and blue-and-white porcelain vases, China, 18th century, converted into incense burners in Europe
The bottle-shaped vases with powder-blue bases are decorated with blue enamel in four quatrefoil compartments adorned with various objects associated with scholars and auspicious symbols (bitong, books, incense set, board game, vases, scrolls, ruyi sceptre, etc.). Three small medallions featuring a butterfly adorn a slight bulge situated in the middle of the necks. The vases were mounted on a copper alloy base in Europe to form incense burners. They rest on a tripod base and the ringed necks are fitted with a small openwork lid.
