Description
Pair of round porcelain plates with so-called ‘Pompadour’ decoration, China, Compagnie des Indes, Qianlong period, 18th century With polychrome decoration in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels. Both plates feature an asymmetrical central floral composition centred on a large, fully bloomed coral-red flower with a green and yellow centre, accompanied by flowering stems, small secondary flowers, foliage and a branch bearing a garland of suspended polychrome fruits. The rim is adorned with a compartmentalised rocaille decoration alternating with flowers and plant motifs. It features four main cartouches with undulating outlines, arranged at regular intervals, each containing either an eagle depicted in profile or a fish, these motifs alternating around the rim. These medallions are framed by foliage and scrolls and painted in blue, turquoise, green, purple and coral red, complemented by peony flowers and scattered buds. The first dish is characterised by a predominance of blue, with the rocaille scrolls and several elements of the marli pattern rendered mainly in deep blue and turquoise, whilst the second features a predominance of coral red, this colour being used more extensively in the rocaille motifs and peripheral ornamentation. Diameter: 28.5 cm Chips and cracks to the rim, loss of enamel and restoration on one piece.
