Description
Porcelain brush-washer in the shape of a bat, China, 19th century
Shaped as a hemisphere reminiscent of a fruit or an open bowl resting on the outstretched wings of a bat sculpted in the round, which encircles the vessel. The interior is entirely coated in a glossy turquoise glaze, contrasting with the exterior, which is covered in a coral-red enamel. The bat, rendered in a naturalistic style, has its head turned forwards, its ears pricked up, its eyes in slight relief, and its wings spread wide, the membranes of which blend into the walls of the vessel whilst forming its supports. The body and wings are enhanced with fine gold dots outlining the wing veins and highlighting the fur, whilst the front of the bowl is adorned with a flower surrounded by foliage and small golden blossoms are scattered across the reverse, concealing minor imperfections.
Length: 11 cm
Minor wear and firing imperfections.
