Description
Important porcelain vase in the ‘Green Family’ style, China, 19th century
Baluster-shaped, decorated with a scene depicting the meeting between Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, and Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty. Xiwangmu appears amidst the clouds, accompanied by her attendants and preceded by a phoenix, whilst the sovereign, seated in his palace, receives the goddess who has come to offer him the peaches of immortality. Set against a background of lotus and plum blossoms, the foot is decorated with four enamelled medallions featuring a crane, a motif partially repeated on the shoulder. The neck is adorned with foliage, stylised friezes and ruyi heads bordering peony flowers on the flared section. It is flanked by two handles shaped like two joined sections of bamboo. At the base, a double blue circle with a fanciful square mark at its centre. The scene is traditionally associated with wishes for longevity and immortality.
Height: 59.5 cm
The neck is damaged, has been repaired, and the base is pierced.
