Description
Large circular dish in Arita porcelain, Japan, Edo period, second half of the 17th century
Decorated in underglaze blue in a style inspired by Chinese ‘kraak’ porcelain. The centre features a landscape comprising a rocky mound bordered by a river from which a doe is drinking, enlivened by tufts of vegetation, tall leafy stems and several blooms resembling chrysanthemums or peonies, accompanied by small insects or butterflies in flight. The decoration is rendered in varying shades of cobalt blue with graduated shading. The marli is divided into large, radiating compartments alternating with narrower panels. The large compartments alternately contain stylised floral bouquets and stylised precious objects, probably the ‘Uchide no Kozuchi’ – ?????? – the mallet of good fortune that grants wishes and the attic key, Hôyaku – ??. The narrow compartments are adorned with motifs of knots and pendants, whilst the dividers and the edges of the panels feature geometric lattice or scale patterns. This decoration, arranged in compartmentalised panels, is characteristic of Arita ware produced for export during the late 17th century.
Diameter: 45.8 cm
