Description
A snuff box carved from ivory in the shape of a reclining woman, Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912) – Taisho period (1912–1926)
The face is turned towards the viewer and her cheek rests against the palm of her right hand, the arm of which is bent and resting on the ground. Her left leg is outstretched, whilst her right leg, bent, rises at a right angle towards the hand of her left arm, which is holding her foot. The face is gentle and smiling; her hair, smoothed back, is adorned with a small flower. She wears a tunic and trousers, originally red and blue, edged with floral-patterned trimmings bearing traces of gilding. The foot of the left leg is detachable and forms the stopper of the bottle. Traces of polychromy and gilding remain.
Length: 11.4 cm; weight: 37 g
