Description
Folding fan, Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912)
Of the ‘ogi sensu’ type, the paper panel is painted in ink, colours and gold highlights, depicts on one side a lakeside landscape animated by figures, fishermen and boats, set amongst dwellings, trees and mountains, whilst the other side is adorned with a composition of flowers and birds by the water’s edge. The main hangers and the ivory hangers are finely decorated with flowers, a butterfly and a bird in brown and silver tamaki-e. The mount is completed by a metal hanging ring.
Length: 36.2 cm; gross weight: 152 g
Signs of wear, stains and minor damage to the paper and the mount.
The juxtaposition of an ukiyo-e-style painting on the leaf and a richly decorated ivory mount is characteristic of Japanese artefacts produced, in particular, for export during the Meiji period.
