Description
An important pair of cloisonné enamel vases with gilded bronze mounts, Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912)
A pair of baluster-shaped vases with square-sectioned shoulders, in cloisonné enamel on copper with polychrome decoration on a black and red ground. The body features an alternation of multi-lobed cartouches and stylised heraldic shields, adorned with dragons and phoenixes (ho-o) amidst floral scrolls, chrysanthemums and geometric motifs of archaic inspiration. The constricted neck is crowned with lobed petals enclosing floral motifs surrounded by volutes and foliage, as well as archaic-style geometric motifs. Each vase is fitted with a substantial 19th-century Rocaille-style chiselled and gilded bronze mount, comprising a neck decorated with openwork leafy volutes and a dynamic four-legged base with acanthus scrolls.
Total height: 78 cm
Minor surface wear and normal chipping of the enamel.
