Description
Silver box, Vietnam, 19th–20th century
Rectangular in shape, crafted using repoussé and chiselling techniques, the lid is decorated within a reserved area with two facing dragons flanking a ‘shou’ character. The rim is engraved with branches bearing fruit, including peaches, finger-shaped lemons, pomegranates and arbutus berries. The outer rim is worked using the same techniques to form four medallions: one depicting dormice amongst grapes, another showing fallow deer beneath a pine tree, and the remaining two featuring peony and iris motifs respectively. Engraved on the underside of the box are the two characters ?? – Lê Thanh in Sino-Vietnamese.
