Description
Cloisonné enamel planter on copper, China, Qianlong period (1736–1795)
Flared in shape and resting on a small circular foot, made of copper entirely covered with a polychrome cloisonné enamel decoration on a turquoise ground. The body is adorned with a rich, continuous design of foliage scrolls and stylised lotus-inspired flowers, rendered in blue, red, yellow, white, pink and green, enhanced by fine bands of gilded brass forming the cloisonné compartments. A frieze of stylised lingzhi and teardrop motifs borders the flared upper rim, whilst the pedestal is decorated with a floral frieze in keeping with the main design. The upper rim, made of gilded copper alloy, bears a chiselled imperial mark: Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi - ?????? - ‘Made during the Great Qing Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Qianlong’. The interior is gilded copper, showing the signs of wear characteristic of a flowerpot, whilst the underside retains its original gilding.
Height: 17.5 cm; diameter: 23 cm
Wear to the gilding and slight deterioration of the enamels, a few small chips and visible gaps in the enamel, scratches and oxidation due to use; overall condition satisfactory.
