Description
Statuette of the Bodhisattva Guanyin in gilded lacquered copper alloy, China, late Ming period (1368–1644), 17th century
Depicted seated in the padmasana posture on a lotus-shaped pedestal with a double row of petals, the figure wears a tall crown with five fleurons, the hair gathered in a bun and the ears long with broad lobes. The face, with its serene features, has half-closed eyes and an expression of tranquillity. Clothed in a monastic robe with soft folds that partially reveal the chest, the bodhisattva holds a small bowl resting on his knees in his left hand, whilst in his right hand—formed into the vitarka mudra and raised in front of his chest—he holds a cintama?i jewel. Traces of red polychromy and gilding are visible beneath a thick, dark patina caused by incense residue. The consecration plaque is soldered to the tin.
Height: 20 cm
Wear to the lacquer; traces of gilding.
