Description
Important lacquered wooden sculpture of a Buddhist monk, Vietnam, 19th century
Depicted seated, clad in a monastic robe with loose folds falling over his legs, his hands positioned in front of his chest in a ritual gesture. The head is crowned with a tall monastic crown comprising several lobed panels decorated with applied gilded ornaments on a red background. The face has stylised features with half-closed eyes, and traces of light polychromy, now largely flaked away, revealing the underlying ground. The body retains a dark brown lacquer with wear, abrasions and surface losses revealing the structure of the wood and the various layers of polychromy.
Height: 71 cm
