Description
Scroll thangka depicting a Green Tara in her paradise, Tibet, 19th century Polychrome pigments on cotton canvas, mounted in a silk border. Green Tara (Drolma Jangku) is depicted in the centre, seated in lalitasana on a double lotus, her right leg slightly extended and her right hand in the varadamudra, holding the stem of a lotus flower whose petals bloom near her shoulder, whilst her left hand, drawn towards her heart, holds a second flower. She is surrounded by abundant lotus foliage and flowering tendrils and is depicted in front of a multi-storeyed palatial building, evoking her paradise of the Sandalwood Grove (Khadiravana). On either side of the deity stand, presumably, Marici, yellow-orange in colour, and Ekajati, blue-black in colour, her two traditional companions in this depiction. The upper section features several Buddhist figures and masters of the tradition, some set within circular medallions, whilst the lower register depicts various deities, celestial figures and scenes of offerings. Mounted on silk with a blue background and brown border. Painting dimensions: 58 x 38.5 cm; overall dimensions: 115 x 63 cm Significant wear, loss and alteration of pigments, tears and gaps in the canvas; the silk border is heavily worn, with tears and fraying.
