Commentary:
Robert L. Delevoy recalled in 1985 that "Rops had to 'flesh out' certain landscapes drawn by Artan" in 1863 (Félicien Rops, Lausanne-Paris: Cosmos Monographies-Bibliothèque des Arts, 1985, p. 80). The two artists had met as early as 1852, at the Atelier Saint-Luc in Namur. The support for our marine - a canvas bearing the mark Deforge & Carpentier, a firm established in Paris, rue Halévy, and attested between 1856 and 1863 - fits in with this chronology. Considered in the light of the stylistic characteristics of the work and the "reputedly 'realistic' approach to nature" emphasised by Delevoy, these elements reinforce the coherence of this hypothesis of Rops' collaboration.
