Heliogravure [?] in black on paper, signed and dated '1921' in the plate middle left Provenance : Private collection, France (by descent from the model) Note : Richard Guino gave a singular place to marble in the decisive years of his training, between Barcelona and Paris, even before his collaboration with Auguste Renoir. Several old photographs and studio archives bear witness to his early interest in direct carving and the sensual qualities of this material, which he exploited in female figures with simplified volumes and subtly modelled surfaces. From before 1912, Guino produced a number of sculptures in marble or intended for translation into marble, including the Torso of a Nude Woman now in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, formerly in the collection of Ivan Morozov. This use of marble, relatively rare in the artist's early work, reveals Guino's sculptural ambition and his place in the modern research of the early twentieth century, between Mediterranean heritage, synthesis of forms and decorative primitivism. The few known marbles from this period, often in private hands or unlocated, provide particularly valuable evidence of his early plastic research. Further information: The Succession Guino holds several portraits of a woman who was previously known only as "Mme Pageix's niece". Born Marie Robillon, she was the wife of Georges Pageix, one of Madeleine's maternal uncles and a medical officer in the Great War, and the godmother of Richard Guino and Gabrielle Borzeix's eldest son, Georges Guino.
