Description
William-Henry JOHNSON (1901–1970), attributed to - Cagnes-sur-Mer Oil on canvas Signature (possibly apocryphal) bottom right 73 x 60 cm (re-stretched) Note: William Henry Johnson was an African-American painter, born in Florence, South Carolina, on 18 March 1901 and died in Central Islip (New York State) on 1 January 1970. *The American Heritage* considers him one of the great American painters of the 20th century. From 1926 to 1929, he first settled in Paris, where he developed a passion for the Expressionist movement, particularly for Chaïm Soutine, whose influence on his early works he acknowledged. During a long stay in Cagnes-sur-Mer, he met the Danish artist Holcha Krake (1885–1944), who was fifteen years his senior, and whom he married. Our painting belongs to the Expressionist movement. It is an urban landscape painting that offers a vibrant and dynamic depiction of the location. This composition provides an intense and lively interpretation of Cagnes-sur-Mer. The work, with its swirling brushstrokes and vibrant colours, embodies the emotional and expressive nature of Expressionism. The buildings, distorted and intertwined, possess an abstract quality that evokes movement and energy.
