Note: Our painting likely depicts, in the background, the Dien Tho Palace, situated within the Imperial City of Hué, with the lotus pond (with its characteristic balustrade) adjoining the pleasure pavilion where the Queen Mother would come to relax and have tea.
Thanks to the Society of French Orientalist Painters, Henri Dabadie was able to spend a year at Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algeria and travel to Tunisia. In 1928, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. That same year, he won the Indochina Prize and settled in Hanoi, where he taught at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, headed by Victor Tardieu
