In 1964, the artist became interested in the motif of the stag and its metamorphoses. She created a ‘Head of Actaeon’ for Balenciaga – the hunter transformed into a stag – intended for the central display window and flanked in the side windows by two identical models of this animal, depicted in an intentionally graceful and somewhat unrealistic pose. Each of the bronze-cast stags bears the monogram of its recipient. The stags created for Cristóbal Balenciaga, bearing the initials ‘C.B.’ and presented to Hubert de Givenchy, were auctioned on 14 June 2022 at Christie’s and sold for €252,000 and €315,000 respectively. The piece we are presenting today bears the monogram ‘GC’ for Germaine Cellier (1929–1976), a French perfumer known as one of the very first female ‘noses’ in the history of haute perfumery during the post-war era. In 1949, Cristóbal Balenciaga called upon her talent, and she created a unique fragrance for him: ‘ La Fuite des Heures’, a woody, amber and chypre fragrance. François and Jacqueline Sommer, who were building up a significant collection of animal art, also acquired a large model, intended for the Museum of Hunting and Nature which they had just founded. Later, Jacqueline Sommer recommended her to the jeweller Chaumet, who was interested in creating animal sculptures from precious materials. These friendly ties led to Janine Janet exhibiting her watercolours at the Museum of Hunting and Nature in 1972. Jean Marais also acquired this stag. The actor placed it in his home in Vallauris, where it symbolically stands guard at the foot of a portrait of Jean Cocteau.
