Day Schnabel (1898–1991) Abstract Composition [+1 lithograph] 1968 Ink on paper, monogrammed and dated in the lower left-hand corner 55 x 75 cm Accompanied by a lithograph on paper, signed lower right and numbered 43/75 lower left Born in Vienna, Day Schnabel was a naturalised American painter and sculptor. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She turned to sculpture upon her arrival in Paris in 1935. A pupil of Maillol and later of Zadkine, she learnt from her masters the art of composition, the balance of contrasts, and the interplay of negative and positive space. Exile brought about by the Second World War led her to the United States. She exhibited regularly in New York from 1942 onwards. At the end of the war, she reconnected with the Parisian art scene and took part in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1948, exhibited at Denise René’s newly established gallery, and also at the Salon de Mai from 1950 onwards. Schnabel’s favoured materials include welded steel, bronze, brass, marble, limestone, granite, cast stone, wall reliefs, found objects, gouache and ink. His works are now part of the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, the Walker Art Centre and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
