Description
ISA SATOR "Barbie on the VIP" Acrylic on canvas, signed 60 x 120 cm ISA SATOR "Barbie on the VIP" Acrylic on canvas, signed 120 x 60 cm The Barbie who conquered New York Seated in a champagne glass, she tilts her head back, closes her eyes and lets her golden hair cascade down. A black poodle stands guard at her feet. All around: party, fire and glitter. Long before Greta Gerwig’s film, released in 2023, Isa Sator took the most caricatured symbol of femininity and transformed it into something entirely different: a multitude of women – executive women, opera singers, high priestesses, sovereign bimbos. None of them allow themselves to be pigeonholed. This one reigns supreme, and she knows it. The canvas bears the artist’s signature: paint applied directly to the bottle in a single, continuous stroke, without hesitation. In September 2007, for her first American exhibition, Isa Sator presented her ‘Smart Barbies’ at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park, a historic institution in Manhattan. Times Square publicised the event, *Le Petit Journal de New York* reported on it, and the critic Ward Morehouse III wrote: ‘Like her personality, her painting has a contagious zest for life.’ In France, Jean-Paul Gavard-Perret situates her artistic language at the crossroads of Nolde, Cocteau, Masson and Basquiat. Nineteen years on, this work from the series that opened the doors to America for the artist has lost none of its audacity or vitality. This work is seeking a guardian.
