A Polish painter, draughtsman and pastel artist, Tytus Maleszewski was born in Sieradz in 1827 and died in Warsaw in 1898. He studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts between 1844 and 1850, before continuing his training in Paris from 1856 onwards in Léon Cogniet’s studio. There he became acquainted with, amongst others, the painter Wojciech Gerson and the poet Cyprian Kamil Norwid, of whom he painted a portrait. He then completed his training at the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome between 1858 and 1860.
A sought-after portraitist, Maleszewski made several visits to Paris, where his works were well received, notably his portraits of Empress Eugénie and the famous opera singer Adelina Patti, exhibited in 1870. He painted numerous prominent figures of his time, including the composer Stanisław Moniuszko, the painter Artur Grottger and the poet Teofil Lenartowicz.
