Description
Henri Michaux (1899–1984) Composition 1974 Ink and gouache on paper, monogrammed at the bottom centre 49.5 x 32 cm Provenance: Private collection, Luxembourg Exhibitions: Henri Michaux, Recent Works, Le Point Cardinal, Paris, 15 April – 15 June 1980, reproduced in the catalogue. This work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné currently being prepared by Micheline Phankim, Rainer Michael Mason and Franck Lebovici under the reference HM5854. Condition report: Framed, small thumbtack holes at the corners, traces of adhesive tape on the reverse ‘Born, raised and educated in an environment and a culture solely centred on the verbal, I paint to decondition myself,’ writes Michaux in ‘Émergences-Résurgences’, ‘to stop the itch of the how and the why. In order to overcome the limitations of these most imperfect means of expression, he sets about, through the act of painting, liberating these forces of the mind. The emergence of thought—akin to fleeting emanations, to unconscious outbursts—takes the form of traces, stains, signs, ideograms and alphabets, under the combined action of certain media suited to the fleeting world of apparitions, such as watercolour, pastel, gouache, pencil and coloured inks… For more than fifty years, he devoted himself to depicting the awareness of existence and the passage of time, likening it to a struggle – ‘a drawing without a struggle is boring,’ he used to say.” Patricia Brignone
