Description
Arthur Aeschbacher (1923–2020) *Couleur croisée* 1965 Collage of torn paper on paper, signed at the bottom centre and dated at the bottom left; countersigned, titled and dated on the reverse 25 x 15.8 cm Condition report: Boxed text Born in Geneva in 1923, Arthur Aeschbacher trained under Fernand Léger, then at the École du Louvre, the Atelier de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian. A leading figure in ‘affichisme’—an artistic movement that emerged in the 1950s—he developed a body of work based on the reuse, cutting up and collage of torn posters. His work, however, differs from that of Raymond Hains and Jacques Villeglé in the importance he attaches to typography. His compositions, rich in colour and featuring layers of letters, words and varied typefaces, transform fragments of posters into genuine testimonies to urban memory.
