Antonio Seguí (1934–2022) Profile of a Man in a Hat 1963 Gouache, pastel and graphite on paper, signed top left 64 x 49 cm Provenance: Private collection, Luxembourg This work is catalogued in the Seguí archives under no. 1963-144. Condition report: Framed. Minor marks Antonio Seguí left Argentina in 1951 and settled permanently in France in 1963, the year in which he produced this work. He developed a distinctive artistic style inspired by the irony of the German Expressionists and the absurdity of what he termed, quoting Balzac, ‘the human comedy’. His paintings, populated by men with a confident stride, capture the hustle and bustle of city life with humour and an apparent gentleness, masking a profound existential angst.
