Description
Jean Dupuy (1925–2021) *Trou Verge* 1983 Acrylic on canvas (unframed) signed with the artist’s stamp “Ypudu anagrammiste” and dated at the bottom centre 17 x 19.5 cm Provenance: > Donated by the artist > Private collection, Paris ‘Ypudu’ is the exact anagram of ‘Dupuy’. The French artist Jean Dupuy made a name for himself in the 1970s through his experiments and his contribution to the promotion of performance art, technological arts and conceptual art in New York. Close to the Fluxus movement, he has been developing a distinctive practice centred on anagrams since the 1980s. For him, this play on letters becomes a genuine enigma: each text contains the clues needed to uncover a second meaning. By imposing constraints on form, colour and the number of letters, Dupuy seeks to bring out the unexpected from everyday language.
