Description
Lucio FONTANA (1899–1968) Alfa Romeo Trophy, 1964. An extremely rare racing trophy designed by Lucio Fontana for Alfa Romeo in 1964. Signed ‘L Fontana’. Diameter: 27 cm As a tribute to racing cars, the artist chose to use steel to evoke the mechanics of racing cars. The artist’s signature, ‘L Fontana’, is engraved in the lower right-hand corner. A smaller disc is attached to the main disc; it is engraved with ‘Alfa Romeo – A – Milano – Rasey Feezell – Per Le Victoire Sportive – 1964’. This work of art consists of two discs that strongly suggest the notion of space. The work was commissioned by Alfa Romeo from Lucio Fontana in 1964 and produced in a run of 130 copies to be presented, in the form of a trophy, to the car manufacturer’s top drivers in recognition of the victories achieved that year. Indeed, in the early 1960s, Alfa Romeo made its mark in numerous races with the finest drivers of the era. In 1963, the company’s management came up with the idea of creating sculptural trophies commissioned from renowned artists of the time, such as Lucio Fontana, Giò Pomodoro and Luciano Minguzzi, amongst others. These trophies were awarded to the various drivers and gentleman drivers who distinguished themselves at the wheel of their Alfa Romeos. They are true works of art and collector’s items for enthusiasts of the Quadrifoglio brand. Bibliography: Objectif et trophées. 20 sculptures for 10,000 victories, Alfa Romeo Éditeur, introduction by Raffaele De Grada, 1983, pp. 6 and 16 – a similar example is reproduced.
