Description
Pair of pear-shaped vases with bulbous necks and two handles modelled on plant forms, featuring a decoration of mermaids Blown and tinted glass Label from Maison A. RACOT on the reverse H. 22 cm Note: Founded in the 19th century and situated in the heart of Lille’s shopping district, Maison A. Racot established itself during the Belle Époque as one of the North’s leading destinations for decorative arts and tableware. Supported by a discerning bourgeois clientele, the firm offered a refined selection of luxury and semi-luxury items, combining fine porcelain services, cut crystal pieces, bronzes and decorative objects. The gold medals won at World’s Fairs and regional exhibitions, notably in 1878 and 1883, conferred upon it a prestigious commercial reputation, which it proudly displayed on its gilded sales labels. Like the great Parisian department stores of the time, the firm did not have its own production workshops but operated as a trendsetter: it selected its collections directly from the finest French, Belgian and Central European manufacturers, before distributing them under its own brand. Today, the presence of its label on an item serves as a valuable indicator of provenance, attesting to careful distribution dating from the turn of the 20th century.
