Description
Pierre Adrien DALPAYRAT (1844–1910). VASE with a tapered neck and wide body, decorated with a relief design of a starfish. Ox-blood glazed stoneware, signed with a pomegranate on the reverse of the base. H. 17 cm – W. 18 cm Note: A leading figure of the Art Nouveau movement, Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat (1844–1910) revolutionised the craft of flamed stoneware in the late 19th century. Trained in Limoges and based in Bourg-la-Reine from 1889 onwards, he broke free from academic conventions to invent a legendary colour signature: ‘Dalpayrat red’, a blood-red glaze mottled with green, blue or turquoise, achieved through an exceptional mastery of the reduction of copper oxides. His creations are distinguished by organic, plant-like and undulating forms, as well as by bold animal sculptures, often designed in collaboration with contemporary sculptors. Honoured with a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, he transformed decorative ceramics into a true avant-garde sculptural art form, whose unique pieces are now actively sought after by museums and collectors worldwide. To the best of our knowledge, this vase, decorated with a starfish, is not listed in any catalogue and is most likely a unique piece created by Pierre Adrien Dalpayrat for an exhibition.
